Each time a significant honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition completely that year
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
